China’s smartphone giants form Audio Quality Society

OPPO, vivo, and Xiaomi are working with the China Audio Industry Association (CAIA) and leading audio manufacturers which include Bestechnic, Edifier, HiBy, HiVi, HIFIMAN, Knowles, MediaTek, Savitech as well as the China Electronics Standardization Institute (CESI) to form the Audio Quality Society (AQS).

The society was officially inaugurated during the China Audio Technology Conference 2020 at the Parkyard Hotel in Shanghai, China, on Saturday, 26th of September 2020. The organization was established to promote innovation towards developing a high definition audio ecosystem. It also aims to create and encourage stricter testing and verification standards.

The society has also unveiled six significant areas that its technical standards will focus on in its mission to improve the audio quality of portable devices and deliver higher quality audio experiences to users.

  • Ensure voice call quality for True Wireless Stereo (TWS) earbuds through a new electro-acoustic communication standard.
  • Support new high sound quality standards with the Low Latency High-Definition Audio Codec (LHDC) Bluetooth codec.
  • Impose stricter requirements for the environmental noise reduction standard.
  • Improve the performance of the Bluetooth connection.
  • Impose hearing improvements that are easier to use.
  • Achieve low latency transmission technology.

With the whole world heading into the 5G era, the establishment of AQS is timely. Ever since Apple started removing the 3.5 mm audio jack with the introduction of the iPhone 7 in 2016, many smartphone manufacturers have jumped onto the bandwagon and removed the 3.5 mm audio jack from their Flagship offerings. Since then, Bluetooth earphones in TWS earbuds and Bluetooth Headphones have replaced their wired counterparts as the preferred audio gear for today’s smartphones. While convenience, comfort, and ease of use surpass their wired counterparts, the sound quality offered remains the biggest shortcoming of Bluetooth earphones.

According to AQS, its technical standards will strive to be reliable across every link in the whole process, from signal emission, transmission, and processing to sound decoding and speaker playback. The result will be a more immersive high-quality audio experience available across a number of devices, delivering a smoother mobile multimedia experience in the 5G era.

OPPO which is one of the founders and standing board member as well as one of the society’s core technology contributors has committed to contribute towards the formulation of the AQS technical standards in the three major areas including Bluetooth codec, electro-acoustic communication, and higher quality audio, in order to strengthen the matching of earphones with smartphones as well as among other audio devices and optimize the human-computer interactive experience.

  1. Great news! Hopefully we dont have to wait a long time until we can atleast purchase USB Dongles + Transmitters/receivers to use LLAC / LHDC on headsets w/ PC!

    • Hi Jared, thanks for the comments. Yes, I have earlier cited the need for an LHDC transmitter to enable not just PC but also other media devices. What I can share is that it is in the works at Savitech and you will be pleased to know that they are the ODMs for many of such receivers for Nintendo Switch in the past 2 years.
