Sennheiser earlier this week announced the HD 660S2, an update to a beloved classic, the HD 660S, which was first released in 2017. The German-based audio brand has shared that the new HD 660S2 is designed in Germany and manufactured at the brand’s state-of-the-art production facility in Ireland.
Ecstatically, the HD 600S2 looks very similar to its predecessor, sporting the same cushioned headband, plushy earpads, folding hinges and acoustic metal mesh grilles; it would be difficult to distinguish between the two if not for the new bronze accents as they both weigh in at 260 grams.
Internally, the transducers are still 42 mm dynamic drivers with a 38 mm diaphragm. However, Sennheiser has reduced the weight of the voice coil and improved the overall transducer airflow via optimal placement and crafting of the outer mesh grilles, allowing the transducer surrounds to drop the resonant frequency from 110 Hz from its predecessor to 70 Hz, catering to hefty kick drums that move with ease. It was shared that these changes are made to improve impulse response and the nuance of low-frequency passages, resulting in a refined overall experience with the HD 660S2 exhibiting a warmer signature.
The specifications reveal that despite the internal changes, the HD 660S2 still weighs 260 grams and has a frequency response of 8 – 41,500 Hz compared to 9 – 41,500 Hz of the HD 660S. Aligning with the HD 600 and HD 650, the HD 660S2 is rated at 300 ohms, a departure from the 150 ohms at which the HD 660S was rated.
It is interesting to note that while the HD 660S2 is rated at 300 ohms, which translates to the likelihood of more listening at home via desktop setups, the HD 660S2 ships with two 1.8 meters user-detachable cables that terminate to 6.35 mm single-ended stereo and 4.4 mm balanced stereo jack plugs, respectively in contrast with the 3 meters cables that came with the HD 660S. One would also have a 6.3 mm to 3.5 mm adapter and a storage pouch in the box.
The Sennheiser HD 660S2 will be available for pre-order globally from February 8, 2023, and will go on sale on February 21, 2023, with an MSRP of EUR 599 / USD 599.95.
